Last May 12, a social media post got the Gen X and millennials all giddy and grinning with excitement showing their enthusiasm all over the internet. Chew Chew Junction, a popular 80’s food chain announced that it will be making tracks soon to create new and fun memories for the next generation.
What’s Chew Chew Station?
For 80’s kids who grew up around Cubao, Chew Chew Junction was the place to be. To those who remember it well, it was a train-themed restaurant made to simulate a moving locomotive. The structure had a built-in hydraulic system that made the place move back and forth plus the familiar toot of a train whistle to complete the experience.
For the young customers who frequented it with their parents though, it was the other way around. It was a train made to become a restaurant where kids can indulge in delicious comfort food most especially the crowd favorites like meaty spaghetti that’s served garlic bread, burgers, as well as yummy milkshakes.
While the concept of the restaurant today might be a novelty to the current generation, it was groundbreaking during its heyday with celebrities and personalities often bringing their kids and families to the restaurant. It was also when the Philippine National Railway (PNR) was a favored transportation choice for those traveling south. The original restaurant was located near SM Cubao while another branch opened in Greenhills. Both have since closed down.
Memorable Meals
Chew Chew Station is also dubbed, “The Great Spaghetti Station,” due to its unique meaty spaghetti offering, a secret recipe held on by the Yalung family who owns the restaurant. Some nostalgic noshes that we’re teased to come back include the Kiddie Treat, a spaghetti meal perfect for a little one’s appetite, and the Chicken Bullet, a cream-based pasta. At this point, we can only further guess what other delicious meals they will be bringing back and also new treats to catch this generation’s palate. It’s safe to say though that the grown-up fans of Chew Chew Station will definitely try and relive their love for this popular restaurant together with their little ones.
