Drive along Scout Torillo corner Scout Fernandez and you are bound to see a grand old home that’s teeming with cars along the driveway. The visitors are customers who are looking for home-style cooking done exceptionally well. It caters to people craving familiar flavors but elevated to an excellent restaurant experience. Whose home-style restaurant did they visit? None other than Myke Sarthou or better known as Chef Tatung. Welcome to Azadore, Quezon City’s newest dining destination, and Chef Tatung’s latest culinary playground.
According to the award-winning celebrity chef and cookbook author, Azadore came about as a place where families can come together and celebrate with good food. Chef Tatung shared how he got inspired by village potluck parties where families around the neighborhood got together during the weekend for barbecues. Speaking of barbecue, it’s also the inspiration behind the restaurant’s name: a portmanteau of asador, the Spanish term for “the spit” or rather, the metal bar where the meat is skewered to be roasted, and adore, translated to the love of food. To complete the concept, Chef Tatung sticks to his vision for Azadore by cooking most of his dishes on the grill.
Renowned interior designer Ivy Almario was the one who brought Azadore’s structure back to life. Staying true to the house’s original design, which dated back to the 1950’s, the former multi-level family home became a chic, retro-style commercial space that can accommodate more than 150 seating capacity.
Azadore’s menu is composed of Spanish classics and international fares all with a touch of Tatung’s flair for the delicious. Appetizers and starters include the most tender Salpicao cooked with red wine, the fully-loaded Azadore Salad composed of seasonal vegetables, burrata cheese with a side of honey balsamic vinaigrette, Tomato Lentil Soup made flavorful with smoked chorizo that’s done in-house, and the Oyster Rockerfeller that’s impossible to be satisfied with just one piece.
If carbs are your go-to comfort food, then indulge in a plate of the Three Mushroom Truffle Pasta, which is bursting with earthy umami from the shimeji, shiitake, and king oyster mushroom or the mighty Steak Pizza richly laden with steak slivers, onions, mushrooms, and arugula.
For family celebrations and intimate gatherings, make the Paella Mixta and the Paella Negra the centerpieces of your feast. If you want it rustic and festive have the Paella Mixta, which is cooked from a flavorful fusion of seafood, chicken, and smoked chorizo. For something deep, complex, and intense then go for the Paella Negra. You can’t go wrong with either choice.
Now, let’s move on to the big meat plates. Of course, you cannot talk about the grill without having Smoked Barbecue Ribs on the menu. Chef Tatung’s take on the classic is guaranteed to fall off the bone and tender with a bit of tang. Rounding up the plate is a side of homemade coleslaw and char-grilled yellow corn.
Next up is the Beef Rib eye Steak that is still sizzling on the plate when it arrives on your table. Cooked in clarified butter and topped with garlic confit and chimichurri sauce, this dish makes for the perfect date night meal.
One of the most talked about items on the menu is the Pork Tomahawk, and rightfully so. First, it gets a sous vide treatment resulting in its blush color and juicy texture. Afterward, it takes a trip to the grill where it gets its char and smokey flavor. Complimenting the tomahawk is a creamy mushroom sauce you’d want to pour on everything. Magnifique!
Don’t forget to end your experience with a slice or two of their scrumptious baked goods like the Carrot Cake, Blueberry Cheesecake, and Mango Cream Cake all made from scratch or just enjoy the rest of the time sipping on cool libations from the bar.
So, if you ever find yourself hungry and around the Scout neighborhood in Quezon City, feel right at home, relax, and celebrate as you fall in love with the food at Azadore.
